Petal Shades
Set against the backdrop of Doha’s exclusive Waldorf Astoria, this concept redefines outdoor elegance in a prime coastal setting.
Positioned adjacent to the hotel’s pool with uninterrupted ocean views, an open terrace extends from a lower-level restaurant to create a luxurious al fresco dining experience. The brief, and challenge, was to design a shading solution that shielded the hotel’s breakfast guests from intense early morning sun, without compromising on luxury or interrupting the beauty of ocean vistas.
Drawing inspiration from a petal relief motif woven throughout the hotel’s design, Studio Lord envisioned bespoke shading, seamlessly balancing artistry with functionality.
Intricate metal fretwork with a petal pattern has been paired with tensile fabric to form a sculptural canopy. This is then supported by an elegant, cantilevered frame which eliminates the need for intrusive columns. Essential structural supports are discreetly integrated into flowerbeds, reducing impact and maintaining the open vistas from the dining terrace.
To further shield guests from the searing sun, integrated vertical roller screens were integrated along the façade, delivering automated shading as the light moves through the day. This thoughtful addition completes a design that harmonises sculptural beauty with technical precision - an architectural statement thoughtfully aligned to the hotel’s interior style and that elevates the guest experience.
