The Retreat

C 22 Wellness Centre Ireland 06

The Retreat is a serene yet bold architectural vision by Studio Lord, conceived for the Young Architects Competition and honoured as a finalist. The brief called for a reimagining of Ireland’s forgotten mining heart within the windswept, mystical landscape of Allihies, creating a destination for reconnection and wellbeing in nature.

Responding to the Ireland Meditation Mine challenge, our concept transforms the relics of a once-thriving mining industry into a sanctuary for reflection, meditation, and retreat—seamlessly blending with the coastal landscape and the restorative power of the natural world.

At the design’s core is the conversion of the ancient mine into a visitor museum framing uninterrupted views of the Atlantic. Beneath the rugged rock, a new Service Centre is embedded to house a café, visitor facilities, and a small gallery space. These are complemented by a striking walkway and a lift system, ensuring full accessibility for all visitors.

Further into the landscape, serene and luxurious accommodation buildings offer a retreat experience centred on wellbeing. Nestled around a tranquil lake with sweeping ocean views, these spaces include a dedicated wellness and medical centre, crafted from sustainable and renewable materials. Meditation and yoga platforms are thoughtfully positioned throughout the site, creating moments of calm and reflection.

The design reinforces its commitment to sustainability through renewable resources, solar panels, and sedum roofs - ensuring harmony with the environment and a true fusion of architecture with nature’s elements.
