Blackwood
Blackwood is a luxury detached residence, beautifully positioned within a secluded plot in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex, England. Purchased by a young, growing family with a vision to enlarge and modernise the property, the brief centred on creating a contemporary aesthetic and a layout tailored to their modern lifestyle. The challenge lay in delivering this transformation while respecting the complexities and restrictions of developing within such a highly protected landscape.
Extensive remodelling of both the interior and exterior, combined with substantial side and rear extensions, increased the property’s height and footprint.
Studio Lord conceptualised a design featuring generous ground-floor living spaces and enhanced first-floor accommodation, including a primary suite with en-suite bathroom.
The architectural language is bold and contemporary, conceived as a striking “black box” form. The exterior is clad in black timber with a dark grey zinc roof, crisp window reveals, and minimal detailing. This resilient façade contrasts with a warmer, lighter interior palette, expressed through timber finishes revealed at the gable-end windows. Large openings frame views of the surrounding gardens and ancient woodland, ensuring the home remains visually connected to its natural setting.
A thoughtful and carefully executed design, the project overcame challenges such as stringent regulations on light pollution within the protected landscape. Despite this, Studio Lord successfully secured planning consent, delivering a home that harmonises modern living with this ancient and sensitive environment.
